A Miamisburg man died after police said he was hit Friday morning while standing outside his disabled semi on the shoulder of the exit ramp from Interstate 275 East to state Route 4 in Springdale.

The man hit and killed was identified as 57-year-old Darren P. Hayes.

Officers responded just after 10:15 a.m. to the crash after a 2023 Volvo semitractor-trailer went into the shoulder, hitting the disabled semi.

The impact knocked Hayes to the ground and trapped him under the rear tires of his truck.

Springdale police said Hayes was freed but was pronounced dead at the scene. The other driver was not injured.

The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Safety Unit is conducting the investigation into the crash due to its severity, Springdale police said.

Hayes was a graduate of Valley View High School and is survived by his father, two daughters, a stepdaughter, two brothers and two sisters, according to his obituary.
